Golf is by no means a spectator sport. It is estimated that an average-sized man can burn 1,442 calories by walking and carrying his clubs around an 18-hole course. This is considerably more than a 30-minute gym session, so if you’re getting out on the golf course two or three times a week, you can expect to burn a high level of calories. Besides, golf is incredibly fun, and a great way to exercise while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. however, in golf, as in any sport, it is entirely possible to suffer an injury that could not only end your season, but also cause serious pain, discomfort, and frustration. Therefore, it is important for you as a golfer to not only know the correct way to swing and hold a club, but also to understand the fitness and flexibility methods that will keep you on your game and hitting below par.

Stretching is an essential part of successful golf. A good stretching routine can help to minimize muscle imbalances, prevent injury, improve your exercise tolerance and your golf performance. Golf is a dynamic sport so you’ll need to do both dynamic and static stretching. Dynamic stretches form part of your pre-round warm-up or may be used during the round itself. They are used to prepare your muscles for the rapid elongation they will incur as you golf. Static stretches, on the other hand, are more useful to improve your overall flexibility and are most effectively done at the end of your golf round as part of your cool down.

The primary muscles used during golfing are located in the arms, legs, neck, shoulders, and wrists. You’ll need to stretch these muscles each time you play. Don’t forget to stretch both sides.

Dynamic Stretches would include exercises like Arm Swings, Arm Circles, Leg Swings Sideways, Leg Swings Forward, Active neck flexion and rotation.

Static Stretches include Wrist Extensors, Posterior Shoulder Stretch, Hamstring Stretch, Hip Flexor Stretch.
